Images here: imgur.com/a/Z1d1fnGThe problem is screwing on shower fixtures to a drop ear, when fully tightened they face in completely the wrong direction. I'm on my third bathroom and this has always happened to me. On my first bathroom I just used a lot of teflon tape, but that seems like a hack considering how important leak prevention is. I made it work in my second bathroom by using a nipple attachment in-between, but I don't like this solution as it reduces the diameter of the pipe by a good margin, and again it feels hacky. In my third bathroom, I just don't have the space to use this method between the wall and tile. I'm about to install the fixtures so am curious if there is something I am missing.

It's a "feel" thing. You are on the right path, usually if it doesn't work the first time i'll add a round or two of telfon and i'll try again, as long as it's not unscrewing itself, it shouldn't leak.
